Graduate Studies

The graduate program of the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations emphasizes scholarship based on sound knowledge of the languages, civilizations, and material culture of the Near East. The department’s main faculty strengths are in the areas of the Arabic Humanities, Assyriology, the Classical Near East, combining the study of antiquity with that of the early Islamic world; and Egyptology.

Interdisciplinary programs can be developed on an individual basis, in collaboration with such departments and programs as Anthropology, Classics, Comparative Literature, History, History of Art, Medieval Studies, and Religious Studies. The Department also maintains archaeological field projects in Egypt.

The resources at Yale available to graduate students include the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, the Near East Collection, the Yale Babylonian Collection, the Yale Egyptian Collections, and much else besides.
