Jon Beltz completed his PhD at Yale University in 2023. His main interests lie in ancient Mesopotamian religion and literature, in particular incantation texts. His dissertation focused on the “grim reaper” figure Namtar in cuneiform textual sources from the late third millennium BCE to the late first millennium BCE, situating him between the categories of deity and demon in Mesopotamian religion. Beltz’ work has also included publication of several cuneiform texts and aiding in the digitization of the Yale Babylonian Collection. He continues his research by focusing on amuletic incantations, along with further types of Sumerian incantations from the Old Babylonian period and from first millennium Assyria and Babylonia. He also dabbles in the study of the Hebrew Bible from time to time.
