On November 13, 2001, the Department presented a panel discussion entitled Arab/Islamic Civilization Beyond the 1001 Nights and September 11. Speakers included: Dimitri Gutas, Religion and Civilization in the the Arab/Islamic World; Kishwar Rizvi, Sites of Prayer and Poetry; Shrines in 16th-century Iran and India; Beatrice Gruendler, The Meeting of Cultures in Classical Arabic Literature; Bassam Frangieh, Intellectual Currents in the Modern Arab/Islamic World; and Benjamin Foster, Crises and Arabic Language Study. Discussion was moderated Karen Foster and Dimitri Gutas.
