Hatem Alzahrani will present: "When the Later Gives Birth to the Former: Word-Meaning Relation between al-Jurj_n_ and Saussure"Talk Description: "Many modern Arab scholars have been possessed by a tendency to link classical Arabic literary concepts to those developed in Western modernity, claiming some kind of cultural precedence. An example of this tendency is the argument that al-Jurj_n__s (d. 471/1078) perception of the word-meaning relation in his theory of na_m preceded Saussure's (d. 1913) concept of linguistic sign as being composed of two inseparable parts, i.e. signifier and signified. The talk will examine the accuracy of such a comparison."Light food and drink will be provided. The NELC Roundtable is sponsored by the GSAS Dean's Fund.
