Self and Space Symposium

Registration is now open for the scholars’ symposium “Self and Space: Household Identity and Domestic Cult in the Ancient Mediterranean and Near East,” taking place on April 12, 2014, at the Whitney Humanities Center at Yale University. Each panel topic will include a lecture from an invited speaker, short introductions to the topic from 3 panel members, and will then focus on discussion. This symposium is designed to encourage audience interaction with the speakers and panel members in a semi-formal environment, creating a space for interdisciplinary dialogue regarding identity, religion, and materiality at the household level. 

Themes to be addressed include problematizing terminology associated with the household and religious practice therein; religious syncretism and the interaction of religions in household contexts across geographic, cultural, and temporal boundaries; the performative aspects of domestic cult and the associated material culture; settlement and household archaeology; magic and medicine; and the textual and epigraphic record of religious identity and performativity in domestic contexts.
